If you run a local business, "SEO" can feel like a vague, technical mess. It isn't. Local SEO comes down to a short list of concrete things — done well and kept up to date. Here's the order we tackle them in for every client.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Your Google Business Profile is what shows up in the map pack and in Google Maps when someone searches "near me." Make sure your name, address, phone number, category, hours, and service area are all accurate and filled in completely — an incomplete profile is a missed opportunity every single day it stays that way.
2. Keep your business information consistent everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp, and any other directory you appear in. Inconsistent information (a slightly different address format, an old phone number) quietly undermines how much search engines trust your listing.
3. Build pages around what people actually search for
Instead of one generic homepage, create clear pages for each core service and — if you serve multiple areas — each major location. A plumber serving three towns benefits far more from three well-written service-area pages than from one page trying to cover everything at once.
Things to include on each page:
- A clear, specific title (e.g. "Emergency Plumbing in [City]" rather than just "Services")
- A short, honest description of what's included
- Photos of real work, not stock images
- A clear call to action — call, book, or request a quote
4. Ask for reviews, consistently
Reviews are both a trust signal for customers and a ranking factor for local search. The businesses that win here aren't the ones with the cleverest review-request tactic — they're the ones who ask every single satisfied customer, every time, without fail. A simple text or email with a direct link makes it easy to say yes.
5. Fix the technical basics
None of the above matters much if your site is slow to load or breaks on mobile. Before investing further in content, make sure your site loads quickly, displays correctly on a phone, and uses secure HTTPS. These aren't glamorous fixes, but they're foundational.
Where to start if you can only do one thing
Fully complete your Google Business Profile and start a consistent process for asking happy customers for reviews. Those two things alone move the needle for most local businesses faster than anything else on this list.
